WHAT’S INSIDE THIS INSECT BOX?

This little box is perfect for gift giving…if the gift is small.   Kids really enjoy folding and unfolding this box.  It’s easy to make.  Just color, cut, and fold.  You can write “to” and “from” on the body of the bug and use it as a gift tag.

The insect box can be any kind of winged bug: a bee, a beetle, or a butterfly.  It can even be an insect from your imagination.

A student once told me that she was going to catch a bug and use the box as its home.  I asked her, “Do you think a bug wants to live in a house that has no windows?”  She said, “Oh, I’ll just cut a window in each side.”

PLAY A READING GAME:  INSECT WORD RACE

If you are using the Phonics Fiends reading program you can use these insect boxes to play a reading game.  Make two boxes to use as game board markers.  Use the sight word cards as the game board.  Set them out in a line.  Place your insects at the start of the line.  Take turns flipping a coin:  Heads = 1.  Tails = 2.  Move your insect that many spaces.  Read the word.  The first insect to get to the end wins!
