JULY 4TH IS AMERICA’S BIRTHDAY!

On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved by the Continental Congress (government representatives of the 13 colonies).   It stated that the thirteen colonies no longer wanted to be ruled by the king of England.  They wanted to make their own laws and rules.

The colonies fought the Revolutionary War to protest British rule and excessive taxes.  After they won the war, the representatives of the thirteen colonies got together to write the Constitution.  The Constitution is the document that describes the laws and rules of the United States.  It begins with the words, “We the people…”   The Bill of Rights was added to describe the freedoms and protections of U.S. citizens.
